The Welfare Bayonet

Letter to Gary North: “You stated that Wal-Mart has chosen to accept EBT. This is probably true. However, it is not always a matter of choice. I am a manager at a grocery store and we do not have a choice about accepting EBT or food stamps. The founder and CEO has said he wouldn’t if he had a choice. However, South Carolina and most of the other states where we operate legally REQUIRE all grocery stores to accept EBT. It actually costs us money to accept EBT, since recovering the ‘funds’ from the state eats up approximately 7% of the nominal sale price of the items. Our profit margin on grocery items varies but is usually 2-3%. I guess the point of all this is: Are there valid grounds for discontent when we only accept EBT because the government and its goons say we must?”
