My (mostly nominally private) employer has a program that offers grants to families to help pay for day care. Though I am not very fond of day care, we are thinking of applying to at least have some options –we can always change our minds later and find alternate arrangements.
The day care grant works through IRS rules where the money given is deposited into a special account. You do not pay taxes on the money (good!). However, for you to take advantage of that you must claim the baby on your tax return (bad!). This means that the dependent needs to be registered with the IRS and obtain a social security number.
