The US Messiah

The rhetoric at the Republican convention is a reminder of an ancient truth: that the state seeks always and everywhere to displace God. Sometimes it has held itself out as a god. Other times it has massacred Christians as worshipping a false god (not itself) as under Nero and Diocletian, or Lenin and Stalin. Still other times, it has sought to outcompete Christianity with the welfare state and public schools. Under the present regime, like Lincoln and the Union, the state and its president are Christ figures, suffering and saving mankind. Remember: blessed are the warmakers, for they shall be called the children of Bush.
