The True Face of the State

Reports on Libya keep mentioning a “civil war.” Of course it isn’t. But what’s happening there is one more testimony to George Washington’s belief that, “Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. Gadhafi in Libya is now bombing his own bases, because Libyans sick of his rule are protesting there. Godspeed to the Libyan people, may they persevere and succeed, survive and eventually thrive in liberty. The lost souls around the world, and particularly in the Middle East today, killed by their dictators are indeed martyrs. But the loss of any government building or base, these outrageously expensive, ugly, unnecessary monuments to force, serfdom, and slavery, is no loss at all. It’s progress.
