I’m taking courses towards my Ph.D at Wayne State University. I haven’t done any Poly Sci work since my undergrad years and I actually spent a year at this large state university in downtown Detroit for my sophomore year of college. My classmates back then were all predictably liberal for the most part, and the faculty is mostly left-leaning as is typical in most state schools. Anyway, before class started last night about 8 of us students were talking and I made the statement that I was a “Ron Paul style libertarian.” I was expecting strange looks but instead each student, all 20 and 30-somethings, responded that they were Ron Paul supporters as well (or at least approved of his ideas and public service)! A couple of these students remarked how last year’s election changed their political worldview completely. These are doctoral students and future academics studying in downtown Detroit. Who would have thought this scene would take place several years ago?
