The Reach of U.S. Federal Law

Lew’s post and the subsequent article about the UK student being arrested and extradited to the USA should tell us something very, very ominous about the state of U.S. law today. What the Obama administration claims is that U.S. law is global in reach and that one can violate government rules even when one is out of the country.

Conversely, the U.S. Government also claims that U.S. citizens who break laws of other countries do not have to face consequences on foreign soil. When the U.S. soldier recently massacred 16 people in Afghanistan, the U.S. Government took him from that country so he can be tried in the USA. Now, the murders took place in Afghanistan, and that is where he should be tried.
