The Proper Role of Government . . .

. . . according to the Baltimore city politicians is to lavish corporate welfare on millionaire and billionaire owners of grand prix race cars. The city government reportedly spent at least $6 million in confiscated (from taxpayers) funds to repave city streets so that they could hold their two-hour race yesterday. The preparations caused constant traffic nightmares for the past several years. The main purpose of the whole thing seems to be to allow the current mayor to enhance her chances for reelection this fall by collecting even more bribes (er, I mean, “campaign contributions”) from all those contractors who made a killing on the scheme.
