The party of (un)limited government

Kent Snyder at Liberty Blog calls attention to George Will’s column condemning the GOP for placing new regulations on Americans’ ability to criticize politicians. Will’s column makes Kent reflect on a previous case where the GOP, with the support of some (and the opposition of more) prominent beltway conservatives, betrayed their alleged principles for the sake of power by ramming the largest expansion of the welfare state since the Great Society into law.

Money quote from Will:

“If in November Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives, April 5 should be remembered as the day they demonstrated that they earned defeat. Traducing the Constitution and disgracing conservatism, they used their power for their only remaining purpose — to cling to power.”
