The Pagan Idol of War

Lew and Tom, I recall long ago reading about Lloyd George’s frustration with Clemenceau and Wilson in those negotiations. It went along these lines: “It was very hard to get anything done, since I was surrounded by Napoleon on one side, and Jesus Christ on the other.”

These two false gods — plus George, of course — bequeathed to us the bloodiest century in human history — a fitting crescendo to the War to End all Wars.
