The NY Times and the “Sweet” Regime

Hey, corn syrup is just fine. Yeah, it makes us fat, but so does sugar, and besides, corn syrup is a Really Good Deal for consumers. So, by all means, change the name, or says the Chronicle of the Regime.

Now, I am not quite ready to believe that corn syrup has absolutely no different effects from consumption of cane (not beet) sugar, but I find it interesting that the “Newspaper of Record” seems to leave out something that is most important: the government forces up the price of U.S.-produced sugar to about three times the world price in order to provide a subsidy to politically-connected sugar farmers. Likewise, this turns out to be a subsidy to corn producers, too. Yes, “good government” is all about subsidizing everyone, which turns out to be logically impossible, but that escapes our New York intellectuals who want us to believe that they always know what is best for the rest of us rubes.
