The Mystery of the 1933 Double Eagle

Writes Kevin Duffy: “Amazing story with a predictable (bad) ending.”

UPDATE from Peter Hart:

“I happened to be on the jury selection panel for this trial.  Happily I was not chosen as the trial lasted 2.5 weeks and I have better things to do than provide slave labor to the ‘justice’ system.

“Anyway, the judge asked us some interesting questions during voire dire.  Like, do you have an interest in gold or the gold standard, and, do you have in interest in the Great Depression or FDR. Not sure how these figured into the trial, but I think they were trying to weed out those of us who would object to FDR’s great gold grab.

“Since then I’ve followed the trial.  It seems the Langbord’s have a strong case for appeal.  Judge Davis (a grade A jerk, by the way) allowed evidence gathered in the ’40s by the Secret Service to be admitted.  Since all of the agents who gathered this evidence are dead, the Langbord’s can argue that it is hearsay.

“Good luck to them.  I’d love to see them stick it to the government and put the proceeds from the sale of their coins to good (private) use.”
