The Monster Napoleon

The Wednesday LRC link to the book review about the monster Napoleon reminded me of Paul Johnson’s excellent little biography of Napoleon (part of the Penguin Lives series), and especially this chilling statement:

“He disregarded losses, provided his objectives were secured. He told Metternich in 1813, during a day-long argument about the future of Europe, that he would gladly sacrifice a million men to secure his paramountcy” (p. 51).

Why is Napoleon not universally condemned as a monster instead of small fry like Saddam Hussein?
