The Lost City

This film about pre-Castro Havana, got mixed reviews but that’s no surprise since its hero (played by Cuban-born Andy Garcia) is a practicing paleolibertarian. He’s a nightclub owner who has little use for Batista or Castro. He values his family, his honor and his trade and is described as “stateless” at one point.

He declines to do business with the mob, at some risk to his safety. He battles with Castro’s thugs who slowly take over his business. Ultimately, he leaves the country to escape communism even though the woman he loves remains behind, enthralled by the revolution. He takes a job as a dishwasher in New York and thanks the owner for the opportunity. Ultimately, he reopens his nightclub in New York City.
