The Land of the Free?

It’s become the land of the flea, under the microscope of the police state. And only Ron Paul is talking about spying, habeas corpus, torture, the patriot act, secret prisons, and executive near-dictatorship. (Thanks to Robert Hiett.)

The land of the free

continues its transformation into Brazil:

from Congresisonal Quarterly:

NEW CAPITOL SECURITY CHECKPOINTS WILL DISRUPT TRAFFIC

In response to the elevated terror alert level in Washington D.C., the U.S. Capitol Police starting tonight will inspect every car that drives by the Capitol or its office buildings. The move could cause considerable traffic headaches for employees and visitors but is considered necessary in order to safeguard the area. Police will operate roughly ten “vehicle screening checkpoints” around the perimeter of the Capitol complex, including heavily traveled Constitution and Independence Avenues from about 3rd Street on the west side and 2nd Street on the east side. Cars driving around the office buildings also will be inspected. The inspections could cause considerable delays and motorists who use the perimeter streets should consider taking another route, Capitol Police spokesman Michael Lauer advised. Police armed with semi-automatic weapons guarded the Capitol grounds today, but visitors and tours continued as usual. There are no plans to limit visitor access, Lauer said. The checkpoints could be in place through the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration, according to police sources.

Does anyone really believe this is only a “temporary” measure? More likely, this will be expanded to cover all government buildings in DC, and across the country, so soon you will not be able to drive anywhere without having your car inspected by at least one “Homeland Security” draftee.
