And that other party, too, of course. But the Republicans are going out of their way to thrust their moral and intellectual bankruptcy to new heights. Why, for instance, are the sexual peccadilloes of a presidential candidate sufficient grounds to disqualify him for the White House, while advocating the intensification and expansion of wars, draconian police state practices, assassination, torture, and imprisonment without charge or trial will bring the baseball-capped fans of one or another past war to their feet in thunderous applause?
I wonder, as well, whether the war-lovers might set their cyclopian stare on the Turner Classic Movies channel. TCM was advertising the George M. Cohan inspired film, Yankee Doodle Dandy. One of the songs contained in this movie is “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” part of the lyrics of which proclaim “And forever in peace may you wave.” Peace? Peace? Will the Department of Homeland Security descend upon TCM to ferret out any other films containing “peace” messages? Will the DHS soon label TCM a traitorous and terrorist organization? Will TCM’s film library be shipped off to solitary confinement at Guantanamo? I suspect that Newt Gingrich — with his arrogant contempt for anything that serves human rather than institutional interests — will lead all other GOP contenders (except one) to move against this subversive threat!12:13 am on November 30, 2011 Email Butler Shaffer
