The ID of the Beast

In history, the attempt to prophesy from the Scriptures has typically led to disaster. But I kind of liked the focus, a few years ago, of members of the religious right on the dangers of a world government as prefigured, they said, in the Book of Daniel and the Apocalypse. Too bad they combined it with such notions as the grocery store barcode as the Number of the Beast. But since the head of the new Roman empire–666 probably referred to Nero Caesar–turned out to be a co-religionist, they see all such talk as unpatriotic. Indeed, they have happily enlisted in the imperial project. Stories of the global police state abuilding, which they once would have found ominous, they now ignore. God is in charge of Bush, and Bush is in charge of us. What could go wrong? (Thanks to Sean Corrigan for the link.)
