The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Saw The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy this weekend. I loved the Douglas Adams books, the first four of which I read when I was about 13. I heard and loved some of the old radio shows, but I’ve been waiting nearly 20 years for this movie.

I thought it was OK. I couldn’t help thinking to myself that some books are simply meant to be books. What was hysterical on the page wasn’t always so great on the screen. And I have no idea how someone who hadn’t read the book(s) could really enjoy it, or if he wouldn’t wonder if he’d been left out of a big inside joke.

Still, for a Hitchhiker fan it was worth seeing. The portrayal of Zaphod, president of the galaxy, is absolutely perfect. A total nitwit is running the galaxy and everyone knows it.
