The Heartland

Writes Samuel Bostaph:

I heard another anti-war, country and western song this morning. That makes at least four that have come out in the last few months. First was Merle Haggard with his “Suddenly the War is Over, That’s the News.” Then, came Willie Nelson with a song that hasn’t gotten as much exposure because he only sings it live. I can’t even recall the name of it–but, it’s
patriotic Willie singing against the war. Even Hank Williams, Jr. is out with “Why
Can’t We All Just Getta Long–neck, and raise a glass to peace and
harmony.”

The one I heard this morning is by a minor South Texas singer, and uses “Oh Say Can You See…” as the refrain in a song about a cowboy who won’t sing it because he questions whose freedom it celebrates.

When groups like the Dixie Chicks and artists like Merle and Willie are singing against a war, the omens are not good for George W. in the South and Southwest–the usual heartland of Republican support.
