The Haunting

One can have only sympathy for Laura Bush and pray for her high-school friend whom she killed when she ran a stop sign and hit his car “on a dark country road in Midland, Tex.”

She was seventeen.

More than the rest of us, Mrs. Bush knows that this kind of profound experience is an absolute life-changer.  That she brings it up now only proves that it cannot be banished from one’s consciousness — or conscience.

But that reality applies to the national consciousness, and conscience, as well. Don’t you think that she would understand, much more than her husband, the horrific, haunting burden that young people — even as young as seventeen! — carry for the rest of their lives because they realize they have shed innocent blood?

Even if they were “just following orders”?
