The Fat Tax

Denmark, which already has a tax on sugary items like soda and candy, now has a fat tax. The rate is 16 kroner per kilogram of saturated fat in a food or about $6.27 per pound of saturated fat. It kicks in when the saturated fat content of a food item exceeds 2.3%. What is so stupid about this aside from the fact that it is a nanny-state tax, is that (as LRC readers know), eating saturated fat is not what makes you fat. See the LRC articles of Dr. Miller. Perhaps Denmark should tax bread and pasta instead.
