The era of REALLY big government

Twelve years after Bill Clinton proclaimed the end of the “era of Big Government” and eleven years after Clinton teamed up with Newt Gingrich to “end welfare as we know it,” the welfare state is bigger than ever. The welfare state has grown to such proportions that nearly one in six Americans receive some form of public assistance. I wonder how big that figure is if the definition of “public assistance” is expanded to include everyone whose job was in some way dependent on the state, for example “private” defense contractors?

When it comes to the expansion of the welfare state we ain’t seen nothing yet. Just wait until we are hit with the full costs of the Medicare Prescription Drug program, which Comptroller General David Walker calls the most financially irresponsible law in 40 years.
