The Best Remedy (So Far) for Middle-Aged Memory Decline‏

Resveratrol.* When I read the Barbara Strauch article discussing the middle-aged brain on LRC today, I couldn’t resist writing to Lew about my own remedy for middle-aged memory decline. He suggested I share it with LRC readers. I’m in my 50s. I’ve been taking 250mg of Resveratrol for six months. A few months after I started taking it, I noticed that I wasn’t having those “walking into another room and forgetting what I went in there to get” moments. Also, forgotten memories (e.g., names of obscure actors, names of workplace acquaintances from years ago, etc.) are recalled much faster. When it first started to happen, I was thinking, “Holy S**t! I can’t believe I remembered _______!”

And I didn’t even know that this might be one of the benefits of Resveratrol. It was something that I just started to realize over time. I wasn’t even sure if this was a benefit that had even been mentioned in the Resveratrol literature. I was wondering if it could be considered a reversal of one of the downsides of the aging process attributed to daily Resveratrol use. I did a Google search yesterday and found this article that reports that two studies, one on humans and one on animals (No comment on which category you think I fall in, please!) confirm that my own experience/perception seems to be correct.

I no longer feel I have a middle-aged memory.

UPDATE: Chris Breaux writes:

“I am 36 and have been taking Resveratrol for about 8 months on the advice of an LRC article. Just like you, I have had a VAST improvement in memory and cognitive ability, but I had no idea that this was the reason. I’ve been taking supplements since starting Primal Blueprint, and I just thought it was due to a general improvement in health.”
