The large turnout has two main sources is my guess: repudiate Bush and affirm the savior Obama. Voting offers a psychological relief button to release anger and hatred of Bush. And for many it’s two for one because Obama is going to make everything all right. People need to repudiate Bush badly because many of them voted for him before, which they regret. An Obama vote helps them wipe the slate clean psychologically.
