The American lust for ugliness

I was not surprised to find that HL Mencken is just as hilarious speaking as he is writing.

His opening comments in the interview, in which he notes that Americans are thoroughly committed to ugliness, was thoroughly funny. It’s not that we just accidentally allow things to be ugly. No, no, says Mencken, we are committed to hideous buildings, interiors, and cities as a matter of principle.

James Howard Kunstler is obviously the Mencken of architecture and urbanism, and he has certainly made Mencken’s point about American ugliness a thousand times over. His “Eyesore of the Month” feature certainly says more than I can.
