Saluting national flags is dumb no matter which flag one happens to be saluting.
This year I watched quite a bit of the Olympic coverage on Telemundo since Telemundo covered athletes from a large number of countries, and it turns out that athletes from countries other than the USA are competing at the games. Also, I hated all the fluff offered on NBC.
While watching Telemundo’s coverage, I endured yet another flag-raising ceremony, this time for the Mexican woman who won gold in Tae Kwon Do. During the Mexican national anthem, she performed the little fascist-looking salute they do for their flag. I had seen it before, but forgot just how awful it is.
While I’m opposed to saluting any national flag, I’m forced to prefer the little limp-hand-over-the-heart routine some Americans do.
And then of course, there’s the little Nazi salute Americans used to do for the Pledge of Allegiance.
