Tax Reform=Tax Increase

Excellent column by Bruce Bartlett, pointing out that the rate of the federal sales tax beloved by so many “conservative reformers” could be as high as 57 percent. Another problem with the sales tax is that it will require a major federal bureaucracy to ensure merchants are collecting the sales tax and prevent consumers from avoiding federal sales taxes by patronizing the underground economy. So much for getting rid of the IRS!
