Kathryn: Good point! At the same time, why is it unlawful for individuals to sell their votes, but it is considered the essence of the political process for major institutional interests [e.g., corporations, labor unions, etc.] to buy the votes of legislators, presidents, governors, etc., with campaign contributions? Besides, how would a market for voters’ votes ever materialize? How, e.g., would the buyers be able to assure themselves that the sellers had voted as agreed? Furthermore, why would any sophisticated special interest find the voting process either beneficial or necessary to their ends? When has voting produced any fundamental change in what the special interests desire? As Emma Goldman put it: “if voting changed anything, they’d make it illegal.”
