Statists Gone Wild

I speak of course of the Peoples’ Republic of Maryland, heralded by the Baltimore Sun as a “liberal paradise.”  Maryland has long been a one-party monopoly with the One Party being a party of socialists who prefer the diversionary euphemism “Democrats.”  (They have a 98-43 majority in the House of Delegates and a 35-12 majority in the state senate — not that Maryland Republicans are much better).  During the past seven years they have raised taxes by more than $3 billion, taxing everything imaginable, and raising the tax rates on all the old stuff — gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol, etc.  As such, most of their tax schemes are extremely regressive, imposing a disproportionate burden on the lower-income families I whose name the taxes are always imposed.

Their latest gambit is to tax rain.  Under the theory that there is not enough rain water draining into the Chesapeake Bay to dilute pollutants from fertilizers, the state has decreed that all property owners who have roofs, driveways, garages, sidewalks, and anything else that “blocks” rain from directly hitting the earth will be taxed.  All government “property” is exempted, but not that of  churches and nonprofit organizations.

“Satellite technology” (a.k.a. drones) will be used to determine the extent of each property owner’s crimes against Mother Earth and to impose the appropriate rain tax.

This is not from an article in The Onion. It is real.
