Speed Limits: The Competitive Approach

On the Richard Brown Show, the topic was determining speed limits, but to me the more interesting question is: “How can we make driving more safe?” For example, if you widen the lanes, more people would be encouraged to drive a little more dangerously because of the wider gaps between cars. If you narrow the lines, they would be more inclined to behave more safely. So what would be the best mix for the rules of the road?

Solutions could be found in a more competitive arena. Instead of having a top-down approach that covers an entire nation, why not have each State create their own rules of the road? People would try different things, and we would be able to see which one works best.
