David, I grew up on Soupy, even if his early work was, by then, in the form of reruns and nostalgia. A great event in the career of Soupy was when, in 1965, he ended an evening show by encouraging kids to tip-toe into the parents bedroom without waking them up, and go into Mom’s pocketbook and Dad’s pants, and look for green pieces of paper with pictures of men with beards, and send the pieces of paper to him at Channel 5 in New York. Well, he was promptly yanked off of the air for a couple of weeks. Here’s a stage bit where he tells the story.
