‘Smooth Sailing’

“Smooth Sailing.” That’s what AARP and USNews are telling the baby boomers about their Social Security future. “The good news for current beneficiaries and those nearing retirement is that your benefits will remain secure and intact for the foreseeable future,” says Nancy LeaMond, executive vice president of AARP, a lobbying group for older Americans.

Charles Burton Marshall, ~1981: “There is no such thing as the foreseeable future.

“The trust fund will be exhausted in 2037,” say the SS Commission experts.

You know what? In the 1980s, a senate staff colleague of mine actually found the “Trust Fund” — literally written in pencil on a slip of paper in a bureaucrat’s desk drawer in West Virginia. That is all there is in the “Trust Fund,” folks. There has never been any money in it. The corrupt bipartisan pols spend it as soon as it comes in.
