Skary Skidelsky

Lord Skidelsky’s apocalyptic vision: “Perhaps socialism was not an alternative to capitalism, but its heir. It will inherit the earth not by dispossessing the rich of their property, but by providing motives and incentives for behavior that are unconnected with the further accumulation of wealth.” Right, right: capitalism increases material wealth, but wealth doesn’t buy happiness, so we need socialism instead. Yawn. Anyway, the article is worth reading as a reminder of how statists try to characterize free-market proponents as materialists who care little about the Deeper Things. No, Bob, the free market is about freedom, of the individual from overlords like, well, you.
