Silly Left-liberals

Ithaca is a very leftist town and you’ll get in trouble if you have Republican signs on your lawn. Almost everyone here seems to support Obama. Yet Obama is not a dove or a peacemaker. A supporter of the military, Obama has not missed many chances to voice his love of world empire (see a partial summary of his pro-war and pro-aggression votes).

Obama followers tend to love him more than Republicans love McCain. For those who hold Obama deep within their hearts, is that love mostly because of the war? Granted, McCain is much worse here, but Obama is not exactly someone whose stickers we should paste on all our belongings. Obama is not really against the war(s), or war in general. He is not against murder or theft. He’s a drug warrior and part of the establishment. Should an honest left-liberal not reach the conclusion that Obama is McCain Jr.? Their support should at best be reluctant.

Here’s Alexander Cockburn on Obama:

Obama’s run has been the negation of almost every decent progressive principle, with scarcely a bleat of protest from the progressives seeking to hold him to account. The Michael Moores stay silent. Obama has crooked the knee to bankers and Wall Street, to the oil companies, the coal companies, the nuclear lobby, the big agricultural combines. He is more popular with Pentagon contractors than McCain, and has been the most popular of the candidates with Washington lobbyists. He has been fearless in offending progressives, constant in appeasing the powerful.

So no, this is not an exciting or liberating moment in America’s politics. If you want a memento of what could be exciting, go to the website of the Nader-Gonzalez campaign and read its platform on popular participation and initiative. Or read the portions of Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr’s platform on foreign policy and constitutional rights. The standard these days for what the left finds tolerable is awfully low. The more the left holds its tongue, the lower the standard will go.

Obama used to be better on civil liberties and the police state. Now he has caved and favors the total state. Oh yay! Our savior! “Anyone but McCain,” they claim. I guess they really mean “anyone.”

As I drive to work every morning I can’t help but try to understand what the Obamanoids cheer. Sadly, in the mainstream, the deification of Obama has already started. Where will his presidential library be constructed?
