Savage Nation, Indeed

Laurence, last night as I was fumbling with my car radio to find an AM broadcast of the Penn State-Florida State game, I heard a commentator speaking about Abe Lincoln, noting that Lincoln did things that are not recorded in mainstream history books. The commentator (who at the time I did not know was Michael Savage) spoke of how Lincoln imprisoned newspaper editors he did not like during the Civil War.

My first impression was, “Good, he is exposing Lincoln for what he really was.” Unfortunately, the commentator’s next statement was an endorsement of the practice, and then he said that Bush needs to do the same to newspaper editors today that oppose the war in Iraq.

So, I guess that if people like Savage claim we are fighting a war for “American values,” at least we know now what they mean. While Limbaugh has not come out with this kind of statement — at least not yet — we understand that the “values” of which the neoconservatives speak are the same “values” that Hitler was claiming for Nazi Germany. At least the Germans had the good graces to apologize for what they did. When will we hear the mea culpa from the neoconservatives?
