Russell Means as a Conservative Bogeyman

All Russell Means ever really wanted for the Sioux was for them to be left alone by the feds. For this, he was targeted by various right-wing groups.

For example, back in the 1970s, The John Birch Society bankrolled a speakers tour for one Douglass Durham, who was traveling around making speeches about how the American Indian Movement and people like Russell Means were “terrorists” and agents of the international communist conspiracy.

This charge is laughable of course, but even more alarming is the fact that Durham was probably a spy for the FBI and an agent provocateur who helped the Feds on various occasions surrounding the Wounded Knee shoot-out. He later became a celebrity for “patriot” groups who cheered Federal killings of dirt-poor Indians in the middle of nowhere.

The JBS naturally sided with the FBI agents who attacked the people of Wounded Knee, just as it sided with the corrupt border control agents Compean and Ramos many years later.
