Ron Paul and RuPaul

This appeared in Maclean’s Magazine (a sort of Canadian equivalent of our Time, or Newsweek), I kid you not (on March 2, 2013, p. 29):

“Ron Paul vs. RuPaul

“Calgary Tory MP Michelle Rempel, a rising star in question period, was recently asked by a journalist what she thought of former congressman and Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul coming to Ottawa as part of the Manning Centre for Building Democracy’s conference in March. Rempel diplomatically said she respects “a diversity of opinions.” The truth is that Rempel prefers RuPaul over Ron Paul. She is a huge fan of the reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, which has drag queens compete to become America’s next drag superstar. She watched last year’s season, which included contestants Jiggly Caliente, Madame LaQueer and Sharon Needles. The new season began on Jan. 28, but because she has only basic cable in Ottawa, Rempel asked her sister to record the show so she can catch up.”

Note that Miss Rempel is a Tory member of parliament from Calgary. Calgary is located in Alberta, perhaps the most conserviate of Canada’s ten provinces, and the Tories, or Conservative Party is the most conservative of Canada’s three main parties (the other two are the Liberals, roughly equivalent to the US Democratic Party, and the New Democratic Party, or NDP, roughly equivalent to what? I dunno, Cuba?)

Why am I burdening you, dear reader, with this trash? Because in my view, any mention of Ron Paul, particularly in a foreign country, is of interest. What we’ve got to do, in my view, is DRAFT Ron to run for president in 2016. Libertarianism is alright as I see things, but if you really want to accomplish any thing in life, you’ve got to threaten people with physical violence (I’m kidding, I’m kidding – Lew insists I make this clear). So, Ron, unless you seek the presidency of the US in 2016, you’ll have me to contend with. Ron in 16! Ron in 16!
