Richard Milhouse McCain?

One of my favorite TV snippets of Nixon is the one where he says over and over, “I’m not a crook,” convincing everyone who was watching that he was, in fact, a very big crook. Today McCain sounded very Nixonian when he declared that, ever since he was 17 (when he enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy), he has done nothing but faithfully serve “the public interest” and “the nation” and has never, ever, done anything in politics for the benefit of any special interest.

If that’s true, it would be the first time in the history of the world.

(Glen C. reminds me that in his speech today McNixon says he pledged to serve and defend “the nation,” not the Constitution.
