Reason’s 2008 Presidential Poll

Reason has an occasionally interesting and sometimes amusing presidential poll of a “variety of policy wonks, journalists, thinkers, and other public figures in the reason universe” about voting, past and present. Here are the questions:

1. Who are you voting for in November?
2. Who did you vote for in 2004 and 2000?
3. Is this the most important election in your lifetime?
4. What will you miss about the Bush administration?
5. Leaving George W. Bush out of consideration, what former U.S. president would you most like to have waterboarded and why?

Several people’s answers stand out—for good, sad, and bad reasons.First the good. Brian Doherty isn’t voting for anyone, and didn’t vote in 2000 or 2004. In fact, he doesn’t vote at all.

And now the sad. Cato’s David Kopel is torn between Barr and McCain: “I agree much more with Barr than with McCain on almost everything except the war on Islamic terrorists, but that war is, in my view, a national survival issue.” Kopel says he voted for Bush in 2004. What does he miss about the Bush administration?: “John Bolton. He was Horatio at the Bridge, saving the Second Amendment from a full-scale assault at the United Nations.”

And now the bad. Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform is voting for McCain. This is no surprise since he voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004. In fact, he “campaigned for Bush both times.” Bob Poole of the Reason Foundation is also voting for McCain, “as the less-bad option.” He too voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004.
