Lew, ABC is simply following the time-honored tradition of faking scandalous auto safety news pioneered by CBS during the Audi 5000 unintended acceleration episode of the 1980s. Poor Audi, whose North American business was crippled after widespread reports of sudden acceleration, was victim of a staged “incident” by 60 Minutes. I remember reading at the time how countless private and government safety experts tried to re-create the problem but simply could not make the car budge when the brakes were engaged. (Unintended-acceleration victims swore they had their feet firmly planted on the brake pedal, but the car lurched out of control anyway. It turned out that these drivers, mostly new to foreign cars, were mistakenly punching the accelerator, thinking it was the brake pedal.)
