Re: The Silver Lining to Hurricanes

Nice post, Gil. We left Houston early Thursday, and have been staying with relatives in the Baton Rouge area since. The libertarian silver linings I’ve noticed (i’ll stick with your ee cummings capitalization):

  • family and friends: we took some in from Louisiana for Gustav, and now they are taking us in (in fact we drove one of them back with us from Houston to Louisiana to return to his house);
  • commerce: my company and others have been resilient, adaptive, and understanding–even though some were–gasp!–evil corporations (no offense, Vandarchists);
  • technology: computers, IT, the Internet–the wife and I have good access to work–and news, information, and family and friends in Houston–via the Internet. It was amazingly easy for us to set up remote offices in in-laws’ houses–not so easy to get the in-laws to stop pestering us… Note how these three tie together: in-laws provide shelter, with an expectation of reciprocity for the next storm; they baby-sit while we work; Internet connectivity helps make remote work more feasible, etc. I was even able to do a podcast with Lew remotely, from the back porch of my father-in-law’s house.
