Lew, it is perhaps worth mentioning that H.L. Mencken regarded the Pulitzer prize with much contempt and was much pleased when his friend Sinclair Lewis refused the Pulitzer for Arrowsmith (1925). At least, that’s how Mencken tells it in his diary. A diary that was, by the way, used posthumously by The New York Times, enemy of free-thinkers everywhere, to insult Mencken after he was far too dead to stick up for himself.
