You’re right, Max – we can’t know that exploration of Mars is the best, let alone a good, use of resources. But, in addition to the billions for Mars, our protectors already pump billions into cancer research every year. The budget for the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, was almost $4.8 billion in 2006. All research funded by NCI is cancer-related, but there are 26 other divisions of NIH, some of which may fund cancer-related research as well due to overlaps in research areas.

I guess we can have our cake and eat it, too!
