RE: The Garrison State

Lew, if the CSIS guy who spoke to Alan Bock is right and these bombings are the work of al-Qaeda types who cut their teeth bombing US Army and Marine Corps convoys in Iraq, that will take nearly all the air out of any arguments Tony Blair can make about Europe being more secure as a result of the Anglo-American invasion and occupation of Iraq.

A lot of Britons, as I understand, are already unhappy with Blair and the war. If there is an Iraq connection, I cannot imagine them putting up with a government whose actions would have clearly and demonstrably made them much less safe. (This might be wishful thinking on my part, since I hate Tony Blair far more than George W. Bush and Bill Clinton combined.)

This is all speculation, of course. If such a thing were true (I do not know, but it makes sense to me), don’t expect it to have any more of an effect on political life this side of the pond than the Downing Street Memo has. Bush is golden on the subject of terrorism. At least (God forbid) until the next big kaboom here in the states.

Hopefully we’ll escape that. I’ve already been through one. I do not want to go through another.
