Lew, the founder of the Washington Post was not just a banker but Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board from 1930-1933.   This is the time period that Milton Friedman and Anna Schwartz thought turned a recession into the Great Depression because of a one-third reduction in the money supply — a main theme of their Monetary History of the United States.
