Lew: Those who deny the right of secession implicitly reject the “social contract” theory—mythical though it be—upon which the modern state is alleged to be based. The freedom to enter into a contract necessarily entails the freedom to terminate such an agreement. If this is not the case, upon what theory do the statists—including those who like to pose as libertarians – rationalize the existence of the state?
