Unfortunately, the conspiracy theorists I’ve met place the blame on the rich, wealthy, and incorporated. Yes, they are ambitious and can bankroll a conspiracy, but without the coercive state backing them up, they have no real power.

If it’s a government conspiracy, then you run into the problem that the state can’t do anything right. As one reader pointed out to me, the feds couldn’t turn a profit on a brothel in Nevada. When they do go way out of bounds, such as at Waco, they mess it up so badly that everyone notices.

It’s a passing curiosity to me that something may have been amiss in some event or another, but it detracts from the real meat of any issue: Without the state, it just would not be possible for anyone, no matter how rich, to have that much power.
