Stephan, Kilpatrick is a great writer, as you note, a principled conservative and journalist of the old school, and a superb grammarian. But I have to mention the time I tried to commission a magazine article from him. “What’s the fee?” he wanted to know. “$300,” I said (this was 1974). “Hell, boy,” he snorted. “I don’t put my belly up against the typewriter for less than $1,000.”
