Lew—The problem with this is not Stein. The problem is that had someone written a similar essay about Jews, Blacks, Gays, or any other untouchable minorority (Thanks, ‘Archie Bunker’!) du jour, TIME magazine would not  even have published it.

I’m actually surprised that Don Rickles is still “allowed” to perform these days. I doubt if a comedian with his brand of humor would even be allowed to start out in the business today. But Rickles just proves my point: Because he insults everyone, most people understand and love his humor. The people who are offended by the TIME/Stein essay know that TIME would never have published an essay that satirized Jews, Blacks, or Gays taking over a neighborhood.
