Bloomberg’s floating principles remind me of what I tell my students: there is no way to keep any sizeable number of people from doing whatever it is they want to do.

As for the Bostonians embrace of their comforting police-state, I suspect their reaction to the famous “Boston Massacre” of 1770 would have been the same: “thank goodness for the British troops who protected us from the trouble-making radicals who had no respect for law-n-order.”

I have seen almost no connection made between this emergence of obeisance to coercive authority and the fact that this part of the country is the site of some of the most revered universities.  That is only part of the explanation!
