David: Good comments! I would suggest an alternative explanation for such practices, however. It’s not, I believe, that “you always become what you hate.” Rather, as Carl Jung might have said it: we hate what we fear we already are (unconsciously) and try to rid ourselves of these undesired traits by projecting them onto others (i.e., scapegoats).
